07/23 - Going to Gagetown
We packed up camp this morning and began the drive back to New Brunswick. A stop at Tim Hortons to fuel the passengers and we were on the road!
We made a quick stop at the “welcome” centre at the border of NS and NB. Our Baby Trailer tends to attract attention anywhere we go. Especially when we part with “the big kids”.
We stopped at one final historic site in NS. This time we learned about a vibrant Acadian community at Beaubassin. While it has not be excavated or reconstructed, there were information panels explaining the importance of this trading space, the value of the farming techniques employed and the tragedy of the Deportation (again).
Emma refueled here, soaking up some vitamin D. Mama was pretty excited about our next stop! I found a good looking soldier to kidnap for 24 hours!we made our way to the historic district of Fredericton and had a walk-around. Cameron steered us to a hand crafted ice cream shop. It was fabulous, but beware …one ice cream is enough for 2-3 people. Oops. Lesson learned.
While there we started the hunt for a hotel room. Oops. Not a thing to be found within 50 km. Every single hotel in Fredericton was sold
Out. Every single one!! All four of us spent a solid 30 minutes googling and calling every hotel in town. Emma finally struck gold. She snagged the last room at a motel outside of town.
We could not figure out what was going on in town. Eventually, some sleuthing revealed it was the NB Highland Games and that everyone and every member of their clan was in town. So with that tidbit of knowledge we searched out the events for the day and discovered a ceilidh was scheduled for the evening. We could not figure out what was going on in town. We timed our arrival well. It was a bring-your-own-chair event. We were early enough to “borrow” chairs from the Farmer’s Market area and get a seat at the near front. Within 15 minutes there were 200 people standing behind us for the entire evening. It was WAY warm in the building but sitting made it far more bearable. after our evening of dance and music we let Cameron recommend a late nice pizza spot. It is very popular with the late night/drinking crowd. The pizza was fantastic. It’s too bad most people ordering weren’t likely to enjoy the pizza for the goodness it was!
