07/17 Louisbourg Fortress
July 17 Louisbourg Fortress
What a busy day. Today we went to Louisbourg Fortress. It was definitely a highlight day for all of us. We were absolutely exhausted by the time we returned to camp.
The visitor centre doesn’t open until 9:30am. We were in line by 9am and loaded on to the first shuttle to the fortress. We were through the gates and ready to begin exploring by 9:45am.
We began our day by signing up for a Guided walking tour and a chocolate making session. We planned out the rest of our visit based on our scheduled activities and a couple of sessions that we wanted to see/hear.
We all felt that the costumed staff make the experience come to life from many perspectives. Our Parks Canada guide was very knowledgeable and share a solid overview of the fortress. Wenow have a better understanding of fort (military base) vs fortress (walled city). After our guided tour we decided to have some lunch at one of the on-site “pubs”. Our meal wasn’t anything to write home (or blog) about. However, my cup of hot buttered rum was AMAZING!
1oz Fortress Rum
2oz hot water
½ teaspoon butter
½ teaspoon (or more) brown sugar
We checked out a number of buildings, static displays and some outdoor exhibits after lunch. The fortress was excavated, in part, beginning in the 1960s. The “attraction” is a rebuild on the footprint of the buildings etc. only ⅕ of the Fortress has been rebuilt as a means to educate. The majority of the Fortress remains beneath 300 years of soil and grasses.
We signed up for a yummy chocolate making session. We use a chocolate ganache that would have been historically accurate. We were pretty sticky by the time we finished.
Without a doubt, Emma‘s favourite part of our day was probably the number of animals that she was able to visit with. There were sheep, pigs, ducks, turkeys and more. I think my favourite part of the day was going to the baker and buying hot fresh bread.
We were the last people leaving the fortress. It made for a very long day and we were quite tired by the time we returned to the car. We were fortunate that we had discovered the gas station near our campsite serves a variety of food and drinks so we knew that breakfast the next day could be a bit lazy and that we only needed to worry about dinner.
Our meals at camp continue to be quite good as Emma is very well organized and always has some thing being planned in the back of her mind.
