08/03/22 Jumpin’ Jaipur


We were very busy today. We entered the gates of the Pink Cuty and made our first phot stop at the Palace of the Winds. Jaipur’s Maharaja insisted that the entire city be painted pink in 1868 as part of the preparations for a visit from the Prince of Wales. Within the old walled city of Jaipur the buildings continue to be pink.The Amber Fort is Jaipur is high up on the mountain. The lake at the bottom served as a water source for centuries. To reach the top of the hill visitors take either a hero or elephant to reach the top. Even the ride down by jeep still takes 5-10 minutes. 


The vendors were very aggressive. To the point that one of the photographers rode all the way down the hill and back to the bus on the back of our jeep. After our visit to the Oalace of the Wind, definitely had to stop at the Palace of the Waters. we had another fabulous lunch. This time it was complete with birthday cake. We were celebrating Leslie’s birthday! We kept celebrating with a visit to a textile co-operative. 


We learned about hand stamped fabrics, hand tied carpets. Several of the ladies made fantastic purchases of carpets, scarves and clothes. I arranged to have two pair of pants made for me. The finished pants were delivered to the hotel just before dinner!The heat was certainly starting to take a toll on us by the end of the afternoon. We had a visit to the largest outdoor observatory. I found it to be quite fascinating. I would have enjoyed a longer tour with more explanation, but the heat was knocking the socks off us. 


We did a walk through of the CityPalace, but again the heat was almost to the point of unbearable today. None of us regret our 50 rupee hand fans. We were very grateful for the pool. Today was the first time we have been rained upon. But hey, we were already wet, so it didn’t really matter. Bhanu arranged for a young woman to come to our hotel to do henna. Her art work was amazing. Everyone has a love piece of artwork on their arms now.

  July 30 rickshaws and rainfalls Masala Chai makes the world a better place. After a lovely breakfast our motley crew of travellers loaded onto the bus for a jam packed day.  Our day began with a visit to a massive Hindu temple, Akshardham. I cannot even begin to describe the intricate carvings and ornate beauty. The complex is made from sandstone while the inside of the temple is carved in Italian marble.  To protect and preserve the temple we were not allowed to carry anything on our person: no phones (hence internet images), gum, bags, cameras, cigarettes, lighters etc.  It was a HOT day today. That said, the real enemy is the humidity. 4 bottles of water later…. We were off to the races, quite literally. We took bicycle rickshaws through the narrow streets of old Delhi.  August 2nd  Jaipur Jewels It was a long road trip today. Between the colourful trucks, building facades and clothing worn by farm help, the trip was anything but boring.  The road trip was long, so a couple of pit stops were involved. I am grateful to have found a fun skirt at one of the stops. Emma was grateful for some Diet Coke. Upon reaching Jaipur, Bhanu surprised us with a fantastic BBQ lunch. Skewers of veggies, paneer, chicken, fish and shrimp were served over a charcoal rotisserie at our table. There was also a main course buffet. Sooo much good food.  My favourite discovery today was a dessert called kulfi. It is a traditional “ice cream” that tasted like sweetened condensed milk. Absolutely stunning!! After lunch we had a quick walk-about. I checked out the Crocs shop. I find it interesting that “name brand items” (Crocs, Swatches, iPhones etc cost the exact same amount here. For example Crocs run around $35 at home. Here they are around 2100 rupee, which is just under $35

07/23 - Going to Gagetown

  07/23 - Going to Gagetown We packed up camp this morning and began the drive back to New Brunswick. A stop at Tim Hortons to fuel the passengers and we were on the road! We made a quick stop at the “welcome” centre at the border of NS and NB. Our Baby Trailer tends to attract attention anywhere we go. Especially when we part with “the big kids”. We stopped at one final historic site in NS.  This time we learned about a vibrant Acadian community at Beaubassin. While it has not be excavated or reconstructed, there were information panels explaining the importance of this trading space, the value of the farming techniques employed and the tragedy of the Deportation (again). Emma refueled here, soaking up some vitamin D. Mama was pretty excited about our next stop! I found a good looking soldier to kidnap for 24 hours! we made our way to the historic district of Fredericton and had a walk-around. Cameron steered us to a hand crafted ice cream shop.
