07/18 Road Tripping
The plan for today was to simply take it a little bit easier and to enjoy some scenic views from the car. Her day started off at the bakery which is really a gas station down the road. It was a great way to have a nice warm cooked breakfast even though we ate in the car. We have been purchasing ice for our cooler as we go. It’s a new cooler so it has a great drain and the parking lot in the gas station has a significant slope. Combining these two elements means we can easily drain the water from our cooler and add more ice each day or as needed.
Part of the days plan was to go to Midgard Meadery. I struggled to get a hold of the woman so we delayed our arrival at their location by doing a little bit of a road trip to a World War I and World War II military post. It is called Fort Petrie. There were a number of static exhibits outside that we could look at. Truthfully, the most magnificent part of this stop was simply the view of Sydney Harper. It is hard to believe that Canada had it done stations around the harbour watching for any sign of the enemy having crossed the Atlantic.
After our road trip to Fort Petrie, we headed off to Midgard Meadery. It’s a small hobby farm where they grow fruit keep bees and make made in the traditional Norwegian style using their own honey and fruit.
The beekeeper, Michael, took us on a brief tour of some of his beehives and spoke to us about local honey production. We then went inside and had the process of Mead explain to us by our host Jen. Doug and I sampled a number of their traditional and fruit meats. Emma took a liking to their honey. After a short visit we made several purchases and once again hit the road. This time we were bound for Baddeck which is the Nova Scotia home of Alexander Graham Bell. The heat has certainly been fairly extreme so while we appreciate the air conditioning we also appreciate the fact that we can simply picnic in the car and enjoy a little bit of a slower pace.
We stopped at another perks Canada historic site, this one was dedicated to The works of Alexander Graham Bell. This was the site of his home in Nova Scotia where he conducted many of his investigations and experiments that pertain to flight. The museum itself was certainly filled with extensive displays and information. But alas it was not very interactive and we were soon ready to continue our drive for the day and make our way back to camp. before we could return to camp we did have to make one more stop which was for groceries. We hit up the Atlantic superstore and used some PC points to get groceries for the next couple of days. We were excited to find gigantic bags of potatoes and french fries. They are larger than small children.
Back at Camp we prepped a lovely pasta dinner and took some time to relax. Even the red squirrels knew that we were no threat in the evening as we were simply done for the day and we’re not bound to go chase them.
